Deep Roots Market is a successful community-owned business that seeks motivated, energetic and friendly people to join our team. Positions range from fill-in (occasional) hours to part- and full-time positions. Please download and print the application below to apply for a general staff position. Prepares and displays a wide variety of foods from prepared, purchased, or created recipes for department service. Provides excellent customer service at all times.

Status: Reports to Foods Service Manager or Shift Leader

I.    Principle Responsibilities:

  • Provides outstanding customer service as a priority.
  • Prepares assigned foods that include vegan, vegetarian, and traditional items according to created and established recipes.
  • Properly labels food, food ingredients and allergens for consumer reference.
  • Ensures that all areas of Food Service are full and fresh during hours of operation.
  • Ensures that product and food are out by designated deadlines.
  • Opens and/or closes Food Service department as scheduled. Accountable for cleaning, stocking, storing supplies, rotating product and other FS operations on assigned shifts.
  • Performs other FS clerk functions as assigned.
  • Adheres to all required store and health department standards.
  • Consistently complies with all store safety standards.
  • Keeps department clean and attractive at all times.
  • Communicates with coworkers and management any concerns, complaints and ideas.
  • Attend team meetings as scheduled.
  • Know your schedule, be on time and coordinate schedule changes as needed with management approval required.

II.    Demands/Complexity:
This position involves a moderate degree of complexity. Work situations are recurring with occasional variations from the norm. Cooks/Clerks operate with minimal supervision. Work is verified through sales, monitoring and customer feedback. Health department infractions may be detrimental to FS operations. Errors have a direct effect on store sales through poor margin and customer dissatisfaction if product selection is not satisfactory.

Specific Job Skills:

III.    Mental:
Strong decision making, interpersonal and organizational skills are required. Team member must utilize multi-tasking, teamwork, creativity, customer service, discretion, and problem analysis skills on a frequent to continual basis. Occasional teaching or training is also required. Good communication, both written and verbal, is expected daily for smooth operations.  This position requires frequent independent judgment and/or independent action.

IV.    Physical:
Frequent physical activities are standing, walking, talking, reaching, repetitive wrist motion, kneeling, reaching, sitting, grasping, hearing, and handling.  Food Service Clerk also bends, climbs, and stoops. There is frequent lifting required in the position. Applicant must be able to lift up to 50 pounds consistently and safely. May occasionally work over 40 hours per week (must be approved) and will definitely be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays. The position
requires constant standing, work in refrigerated areas, and maneuvering in tight spaces.


  • Background and experience in cooking and food preparation
  • A thorough knowledge of food safety standards
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends
  • Experience in food service -- familiarity with natural foods a plus
  • Ability to organize and prioritize
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer literacy (PC essential, Mac helpful)
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands and follow through on commitments
  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Able to work mostly on your feet for an entire shift with frequent bending, stooping and reaching
  • Ability to safely life up to 40 pounds
